What is Shakti?

Shakti is a sanskrit word that refers to the creative power and sexual energy of the Divine Feminine.  Shakti literally means “to be able”.  It is the force, power and energy responsible for creation–The primordial cosmic energy out of which all is created.  Shakti is embodied in a woman’s fertile physical form; it is through us that the world is birthed, nurtured, fed and continued.

Shakti is the energy of the feminine polarity.  Without polarity, there is little attraction between the sexes.  What has happened to many women, through participation in the workplace, taking on the responsibility of being single parents, and emotional or physical abuse or trauma, is that the feminine life-force energy has been dimmed, shut-down or hidden as a survival mechanism.  Once women begin to reconnect with the Earth and Her rhythyms, appreciate and celebrate their unique creative power, begin to move and dress and act in more feminine ways, the shakti returns to reinvigorate and heal the bodies, minds and spirits of women.  We get our grooves back and our innate feminine energy, our shakti, begins to shine from us and attract to us all that we desire.  Add to that a commitment to understanding ourselves and our way of relating to others, and you heal relationships.  And, one relationship at a time, we begin to create peace in our households, our neighborhoods, communities and send it out into the world.

Shakti is an act of embodiment.  It is drawing the wisdom of womenkind and of the Earth into us and living from an awareness of our uniquely feminine, beautiful bodies.  It involves trusting our intuition, a wisdom from within.  It requires taking care of ourselves and putting ourselves first, so that we are physically, emotionally and mentally able to take care of others.  It takes practicing receptivity, trust, surrender, and compassion.  In the process of learning to love ourselves, love and light spills out of our hearts and hands and yonis to both dream and manifest the world we wish to create into existence.
